Watervliet Arsenal could see 40% workforce cut due to federal cuts
An iconic part of Watervliet could be the latest casualty of President Donald Trump’s continued federal cuts.
Nearly 40% of the Watervliet Arsenal’s civilian workforce could be fired due to a federal hiring freeze.
That adds up to 295 workers, and the facility says proposed cuts could reduce production by as much as 70%.
The Arsenal is an Army owned-and-operated manufacturing facility that is the oldest of its kind in the entire united states.
According to the Times Union, employees who work on fixed terms of one to three years likely won’t be brought back.
Watervliet Mayor Charles Patricelli said he has heard the same rumors, speculation about job cuts.
“I think it’s going to have a huge impact on our community,” he said.
People at the Arsenal shop, eat and buy things in the community, according to Patricelli.
“I’ve been in contact with Congressman Tonko and he’s been trying to keep a handle on it as well,” Patricelli said.
