South Glens Falls filmmakers add Oscar success to the Capital Region
A trio of filmmakers from South Glens Falls helped propel the movie “Anora” to four major Oscar wins during the latest Academy Awards.
Brothers Stephen and Christopher Phelps and friend Ryan Fitzgerald were responsible for the design of the sets, placement of props, and pretty much everything you see on camera throughout the movie.
Stephen was even on stage with Anora’s director, producers and lead actors at the Academy Awards as they won the award for “Best Picture”.
The three got their start in Upstate New York in South Glens Falls. That’s where the Phelps brothers met their friend Ryan at South Glens Falls High School.
They bonded over their love for TV and movies. Soon, a few good teachers at South Glens Falls High were helping nurture and guide their video production talents.
“We had a good drama program. That’s where Stephen and I met,” Ryan said. “We had an art teacher that supported us as well. They took us to film festivals.”
It wasn’t long before the group was winning those film festivals.
Since high school, they’ve created music videos for big name bands, like the Black Crowes. Over the years, they’ve worked on a variety of films, shows, and projects. Now they can add Oscar success to their growing list of accomplishments.
Making it in the world of television and film can seem impossible. However, as these former kids from South Glens Falls can attest to, anything is possible if you like what you do, and don’t give up.
“Keep making stuff, and don’t stop,” Christopher Phelps said. “Find your way.”
