Mindless scrolling in bed can hurt sleep

Despite being exhausted, sometimes people stay up later than they should just to have some time to themselves. They get into bed, pick up their phone and start scrolling. The phenomenon is called revenge bedtime procrastination, and it may apply to someone who has a busy schedule and delays sleep so they can finally relax.

Dr. Alicia Roth, a sleep psychologist with the Cleveland Clinic, said the lack of sleep will catch up with you.

“In the long term, this can go from a choice, choosing not to sleep, into an insomnia, where I can’t fall asleep,” said Dr. Roth. “Because if this is something you do routinely, your body and your brain are going to start to learn, ‘I get into bed and I scroll,’ or ‘I get into bed and I do something else,’ and it starts to lose the association between bed and sleep.”
It’s recommended to stop using electronic devices at least half hour before bed.
