Despite these declines, the Capital Region continues to provide fertile land for farming.
Saratoga and Rensselaer counties actually saw increases in their number of farms.
Despite there being fewer farms, the number of workers hired by farms in the region remained stable at about 5,400, in addition to 6,100 farmers.
The 2022 Census also shows Capital Region farmers are adjusting to market demands, and that is paying off.
Between 2017 and 2022, the market value of products sold at Capital Region farms increased by 52% to $633 million.
