Project begins on a $19 million project to upgrade the Thruway in Schenectady, Albany

Work is starting on a $19 million project to upgrade the Thruway between Albany and Schenectady counties.

The project includes repaving a 40-mile section of I-90 roughly between Exit 25 and Exit 26.

Crews will remove deteriorated sections of asphalt down to its subbase.

The existing asphalt under the Exit 25 overpass will be removed and replaced with a thinner layer of pavement.

There will be other improvements such as installing new guiderails and reflective line striping and upgrades to drainage and culverts.

Callanan Industries is the general contractor on the project. It is expected to be completed in the spring of 2025.

Around 40,000 motorists use this stretch in both directions every day, according to Gov. Kathy Hochul.

Work zone speed limits will be in place. Drivers are reminded that fines are doubled in work zones.
