Would-be Stefanik replacements reflect on Trump’s decision to keep her in Congress
Republican Assemblyman Chris Tague was floated as the possible Republican candidate to replace Rep. Elise Stefanik.
However, President Donald Trump announced on Thursday he’s withdrawing her nomination to protect the Republican majority in the House of Representatives.
Tague, who represents Schoharie County in the New York State Assembly, said in part:
“While the withdrawal of Elise Stefanik’s nomination is unfortunate for America, her continued service in Congress is a tremendous advantage for New York’s 21st District. Elise has been a tireless fighter for our farmers, our military, and our values, and her leadership has helped make NY-21 a model for strong Republican representation.”
Meanwhile, Democrat Blake Gendebien, a farmer, had announced his intention to replace Stefanik. He released this statement:
“I started this campaign because the North Country deserves a representative who truly knows what it means to work hard and deliver for our community – and what’s been made clear today is that Washington knows I’m the right person to do so.
The administration is abandoning Congresswoman Stefanik’s nomination because they need her vote to cut Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, VA benefits, and rural education in order to give billions of dollars in handouts to the ultra-wealthy.
I’m committed to representing the community that raised me, regardless of when that election is.”
