Fire leaves home destroyed in Stillwater

Firefighters worked for over six hours in freezing cold temperatures.

A 3rd alarm fire destroyed a home Saturday morning in the Town of Stillwater.

Crews responded to County Route 76 (Lake Road) at 9:47 p.m. Friday for a report of a structure fire.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, the whole home was engulfed in flames.

Firefighters worked for more than six hours in challenging conditions. Temperatures hovered around 15 degrees which led to water turning into ice within minutes.

“When I got to the driveway it was a complete sheet of ice. So, it was tough,” said Arvin Hart Deputy Fire Chief R. J. Laurenzo

The ice also led to water hoses constantly freezing and caused minor injuries to some of the firefighters. Laurenzo said those firefighters are doing well.

NewsChannel 13 has also now learned who lived inside the home. 3 adults and 1 14-year-old of the Minick-Seldon family all left without a home. The American Red Cross said they are providing aid in financial assistance which can be used for necessities such as shelter, food, and clothing.

A Go Fund Me page has also been created for the family.

The family telling NewsChannel 13 “We want to thank all of the first responders, and we are overwhelmed with the support we have received. We are all ok. Everything in the house will be replaced. Everything in the house was built by family. Five generations lived in that house. A lot of memories in that house.”

Authorities said the cause of the fire would be left undetermined because of extensive damage to the home.
