Report shows New York struggled to recover from pandemic
New York’s labor force was hit harder than much of the country, according to a new report from the state comptroller.
The report shows that the workforce dropped faster in New York during 2020 than in other states and continued to shrink in 2021 while other states recovered.

The state’s unemployment rate was the third highest in the country in 2021.
The report also shows that New York’s workforce was 1% smaller in 2021 than it was in 2011, whereas the rest of the nation had increased by 5%.
The comptroller says this report shows future challenges in employment levels, economic growth and tax collection.
