Albany Police: Shooting caught on video ‘unusual’

ALBANY – Police continue to search for the suspect who shot a woman inside her home while standing on her porch.

It happened Tuesday just before 5:00 a.m. on the 200 block of Partridge Street in Albany.

The quiet neighborhood is steps away from the College of Saint Rose, and many students live on the block they described as otherwise quiet.

NewsChannel 13 talked to the neighbor who captured it on surveillance video, right next to a "Smile, you’re on camera" sign. He did not feel comfortable speaking on camera.

He believes the incident starts when a man tries to steal his motorcycle. Then a woman next door spots the man and calls out to him. The man is captured walking onto her porch, then firing inside. He struggles with the gun, before striding away toward Madison Avenue.

A 60-year-old woman was left hit in the abdomen inside her home.

"We’re very concerned about this incident, especially because of the randomness of it and how unusual it is," said Steve Smith, Public Information Officer for the Albany Police Department. "This incident is very unusual, and we know that the victim was targeted, but it is random in the sense that it’s very unusual."

A student who lives nearby did not want to go on camera, but said she chose to live on that block because she thought it was safe.

Albany Police are not confirming the woman was shot after calling out a thief. They did say it’s unusual, compared to what they expect when they investigate shootings.

"We do have shooting incidents here in Albany, that they’re often amongst people who know each other, they’re trying to resolve some type of dispute that they have amongst each other. This incident is random in the sense that it’s very unusual," Smith said.

The victim is recovering and is stable at Albany Medical Center, Smith said.

"Somebody out there knows something," he said.

Police are asking anyone with information about the suspect to call them.
