Program to feed people in need unveils new permanent Albany kitchen

ALBANY – A pandemic program that has been a huge success now has a permanent home.

Feed Albany unveiled its new kitchen on Sheridan Avenue Friday morning.

Over the last year, they used restaurant kitchens to cook meals for people in need. Now they have a full commercial kitchen, with a walk-in fridge, stove, ovens, and dishwashing and packaging areas.

This is the product of a team of restaurant and business owners, cooks and chefs, city and county officials and volunteers. It started out as an effort to feed hospitality workers who suddenly found themselves out of work and quickly became about serving the broader community.

They served more than 500,000 meals in the last year.

The guess right now is they’ll be cooking about 2,000 meals a week in this kitchen. Those are packed up and delivered to people in need.

The program serves Albany, Schenectady, Rensselaer and Southern Saratoga counties.
