Albany Med lockdown suspect accused of killing mother

The suspect in March’s Albany Medical Center lockdown was arraigned in Albany County Court Wednesday on new, more serious charges.

Dino Savoca, 61, is accused of barricading himself in his 97-year-old mother’s hospital room.

Albany Medical Center was locked down for hours as Savoca allegedly refused to follow directions from law enforcement.

Savoca’s mom, Rosemary Appel, died the day after the standoff.

Savoca is facing three charges, including second-degree murder and attempted murder.

The evidence against Savoca includes voice recordings that he made the day of the lockdown, said prosecutors, and a note he wrote that day.

“This is the very beginning stages of this case, and I think it’s important for us to be patient as both sides gather more information,” Martin Bonventre, Savoca’s attorney, said.

“This is a complicated case, and it’s going to take some time to sort it all out. There’s more information than is really appropriate for me to talk about right now, and really a lot more information that we know right now”

Savoca is due back in court on June 13.
