The Saratoga County business community is still buzzing over the possibility the Belmont Stakes could be run at Saratoga Race Course.
Saratoga Springs business owners like what they’re hearing from NYRA – that Saratoga is the first choice for hosting the Belmont in 2025, if necessary.
Saratoga Race Course has hosted some big races through the years. The Travers is the big draw. It was huge in 2015 when Triple Crown winner American Pharoah came to town and lost.
However, Saratoga has never hosted a Triple Crown race. That could change in June 2025.
Belmont Park is scheduled to undergo a nearly half-billion-dollar renovation starting soon after next year’s Belmont Stakes. It’s such a big project, completely rebuilding the grandstand and the tracks, that there’s a good chance it won’t be done in time for the 2025 Belmont Stakes.
If that’s the case, NYRA VP Pat McKenna told NewsChannel 13’s Mark Mulholland that NYRA wants its premier race to take place at its premier track.
All of this depends on the construction timeline at Belmont. McKenna says they’ll have a better handle on the schedule in the next couple of months.
