Albany Police recover illegal handguns

Illegal handguns were recovered by police in two separate incidents on Sunday.

One was at a hospital, and one was at LaSalle School.

The first happened after 6 p.m. when officers responded to Albany Medical Center. A patient was taken there for a medical emergency, they said.

Frank Smith III, 41, was in possession of a loaded handgun, said police, and also had heroin. Smith was charged and arraigned in Albany City Criminal Court.

Then, police took a loaded handgun away from a LaSalle School student around 9:45 Sunday evening.

Officers were called after the weapon was discovered.

A 14-year-old boy was taken into custody. He was charged in Albany County Family Court.

His name is not being released because of his age.
