Retired police captain: Domestic calls can be dangerous for officers

Retired Troy Police Captain John Cooney says the one thing officers hate to hear over the scanner is the word domestic.

Cooney now provides suicide prevention and trauma management training to police.

He says walking into a violent relationship is incredibly dangerous for police. Adding another person to that situation can make the officer the enemy.

Officers are trained to be on high alert. Two people in a violent relationship can quickly see officers as a common enemy.

Cooney trains officers to move somewhere with no potential weapons.
