A former inmate has filed a lawsuit claiming she was sexually abused by corrections officers at the Albany County Correctional Facility and got pregnant as the result of a rape.

The woman’s lawyer, Anna Kull, confirmed the lawsuit on Friday afternoon. NewsChannel 13 is not naming the victim as she is a victim of sexual assault.

The woman claims she was forced to engage in sexual conduct when she was incarcerated from about July 1, 2014 to March 25, 2015. She said that she was raped by a corrections officer, which resulted in a pregnancy. The woman said she did not tell the officer’s superior about the rape because she was afraid of retaliation.

She alleges that another corrections officer groped her at least five times per week for about three months.  She said that other officers also engaged in groping and touching.

The woman says she suffers from physical pain, depression, shame, guilt and other problems.

In addition to the correctional facility, the Albany County Sheriff’s office and the county itself are also named in the lawsuit. She is seeking $25 million in damages.

The woman alleges that the superiors did not do enough to prevent the abuse, did not implement an adequate reporting system, did not refer allegations to authorities and did not terminate abusive staff.

She cites a pattern of abuse at the facility including in 1998 when four corrections officers pleaded guilty to misdemeanor official misconduct and resigned to settle allegation that they traded cigarettes for sex with female inmates, according to the complaint. In 2003, a corrections officer pleaded guilty to a felony charge that he traded favors with female inmates to have ex.

There were also corrections officers accused of abuse in 2017 and 2019, she said.

Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple said he could not comment on the matter.
