Arrest made in deadly Ballston hit-and-run
An arrest has been made in the case of a driver accused of hitting and killing a pedestrian early Thursday morning in the town of Ballston.
Gary Lucas, 37, hit Meredith Hamilton, 47, in the area of Route 50 and Brookline Road, police said. Hamilton
Hamilton was walking in the crosswalk on the way to her job at the Valero convenience store. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Lucas is charged with leaving the scene of an incident without reporting, which is a felony.
He was sent to the Saratoga County Jail in lieu of bail.
Police don’t believe drugs or alcohol were involved.
The heavily traveled road – which is located near the Ballston Spa middle and high schools – was closed for about six hours.
Neighbors NewsChannel 13 spoke with said they’ve been complaining about this road for years.
Meantime, NewsChannel 13 has learned the town contacted Saratoga County about the issues. The county then called on the New York State Department of Environmental Transportation to lower the speed limit.
DOT told NewsChannel 13 safety is the agency’s top priority, but they can’t comment beyond that.
Meantime, the Ballston Spa Board of Education planned to bring up pedestrian safety in a Board of Education meeting on Wednesday.
