MALTA – A new expansion will bring thousands of jobs to the Capital Region. GlobalFoundries announced Monday its plant in Malta will be its most high-tech one yet.
NewsChannel 13 got tipped off to this news last week, and now it’s confirmed. GlobalFoundries is expanding its plant, investing $1 billion, creating 1,000 jobs, and increasing its output of semi-conductors.
They hope to make 150,000 units a year.
The plan was announced just as Congress right now is debating the Innovation and Competition Act. The Senate passed it, it’s now in the House.
It would devote $52 billion to create semi-conductors in the United States, something there is a great shortage of right now as supply has skyrocketed.
"That’s our call. The call for this industry to create the semi-conductors that the world needs," explained GlobalFoundries CEO Tom Caulfield.
