Albany County says they’re ready for COVID booster shots

As the fight against the coronavirus pandemic rages on, health officials have added a new tool to the arsenal -a COVID vaccine booster shot.

Albany County Health Commissioner Dr. Elizabeth Whalen says it comes at a critical time.

"This is not at all unusual for a vaccine that immunity can wane over time. I think that combined with this highly contagious variant that we’re seeing is what has led to this decision," said Whalen.

With the majority of cases in New York being the highly contagious delta variant and an increase in breakthrough cases in the county, she’s urging people to strongly consider the third dose when the time comes.

"I think it’s very important. People want the best protection that they can get against COVID-19, and really, the best protection that you can get is to be fully immunized," said Whalen.

The Biden administration’s hoping for booster shots to start going into arms in late September, once there’s CDC and FDA approval.

The federal government says there are no concerns with supply, and planning is underway in Albany County.
