The trial is underway in Albany for a former self-proclaimed anti-violence advocate charged with attempted murder.

Dontie Mitchell was charged in connection to the shooting death of Shieer Leggett in Cohoes.

The shooting happened on Aug. 11, 2023 just after 10:30 p.m. in the area of Main Street and Schuyler Street. Leggett was found laying in the street outside a corner convenience store at 125 Main St.

Cohoes Police Officer Jamie Kelly testified about what she saw responding to the scene.

“It was pretty hectic. There were lots of people – everybody screaming, crying,” she said.

Kelly said Leggett had a gunshot wound to the chest. She applied pressure to Leggett’s chest to try to stop the bleeding and performed CPR. He was loaded into an ambulance when it arrived, and Kelly rode with him.

The paramedic did not find a pulse. She continued life-saving measures.

Leggett was pronounced dead at the hospital with injuries to his lungs and heart.

A State Police investigator testified that there were bullet holes in two windows of nearby apartments and other damage. One bullet struck above the headboard of person’s bed. Bullets also damaged a Jeep and tow truck parked on the street.

Mitchell was re-indicted in February for attempted murder after his original murder charge was thrown out. He’s also accused of a criminal sex act.
