Police: Albany High student arrested after showing knife
A 17-year-old Albany High School student is accused of threatening people with a knife, which led a police officer to draw his weapon.
Officers responded to the school on Washington Avenue around 9:40 a.m. for a report of a student who had a knife. A school monitor saw a fight between two students and one of the students had a knife, police said.
The monitor alerted the school resource officer, who responded to the incident and broke up the fight.
As the officer was approaching, police said the 17-year-old was still displaying the knife.
The school district said in a statement that the school resource officer drew his gun, after the student with the knife walked closely past him and continued to display the knife in a threatening manner.
The officer gave commands to the student to drop the knife. The student put the knife down and was arrested without further incident.
No one was hurt.
A second student had a knife but did not display it during the fight, according to police.
The high school was put into lockdown and then a hold-in-place during the incident.
The 17-year-old, whose name will not be released due to his age, has been charged with menacing and criminal possession of a weapon. He was released to a parental guardian and will appear in Albany County Family Court on a later date.
Both students are facing school discipline.
The district said that both students passed through the school’s security screening, and it is not clear how the knives got into the building.
Albany High will have increased security measures in place Friday as a precaution.
