Albany’s Tulip Queen to help decorate veteran graves
Albany’s Tulip Queen, Sam Mills, will be helping decorate the graves of veterans Sunday, May 29 at St. Agnes Cemetery in Menands. Mills joins other volunteers from American Legion North Albany Post 106 and Albany High School’s JROTC cadets to put American flags on veteran’s graves.
Mills is the first non-binary Tulip Queen, named at the City of Albany’s Tulip Fest on May 7. The 24-year-old is a Saint Rose College Alumni.
"I get to be a role model for young kids who have never seen a non-binary person in a role like this. I can’t wait to help those kids who struggle with identity like I did and I can be the person they look up to,” Mills said after her crowning.
Monday afternoon, Mills will also be the honorary bartender at the American Legion’s North Albany Post after the names of deceased veterans are read.
