A local restaurant owner has been sentenced to five years’ probation for labor trafficking.

Schenectady County is charging Piyamas Demasi – who owned two restaurants in Niskayuna that recently closed – Thai Thai Bistro and Karma Bistro.

Demasi hired a woman from Thailand to work for her, then failed to pay the woman, forcing her to live off tips.

The district attorney’s office requested jail time, but a judge instead sentenced Demasi to probation and 250 hours of community service.
