Violations lead to La Salle baseball head coach Ryan Ruddy’s suspension from sectionals; no postseason for all La Salle sports next school year

The day's major news events, business reports, local sports updates, weather information and tomorrow's forecast are presented by the NewsChannel 13 Team.

La Salle Institute’s varsity baseball head coach Ryan Ruddy has been suspended from sectionals.

According to La Salle Institute President Dr. Kevin Calacone, Section II officials concluded Ruddy violated the 10-practice rule during the Cadets’ practices and scrimmage in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina earlier this spring.

The baseball team is still eligible for sectionals, however, assistant coach Mark Powell will take over as head coach. The Cadets are currently ranked No. 6 in the state with a record of 14-3.

The punishment will not end with a sectionals ban this season. On Thursday, the Executive Committee and Athletic Council for Section II voted 20-1 to suspend all La Salle’s sports teams from sectionals next school year. According to Dr. Calacone, the decision was reached in response to this most recent violation and others dating back to 2022 involving the football and girls’ soccer teams.

Dr. Calacone says the school plans to appeal the 10-practice rule violation with the NYSPHSAA.

Correction: Although video footage of the boys’ soccer team is shown, it was the girls’ team that was suspended in 2022 and 2023.
