Native American leaders from all across the state met up in Albany on Monday for an historic meeting with lawmakers. It was part of Native American Day in New York state, which was Monday.

This gathering is the first of its kind.

Native nations held a roundtable discussion with state leaders inside the state Capitol.

Some concerns from native leaders include outdated school buildings, clean water, and worries about drugs making the rounds in native communities.

Seneca Nation President JC Seneca said that they want to make sure that Nativ affairs and nations are at the forefront of the Legislature and the governor’s minds when they are discussing issues.

“They hear us, but then they don’t listen to us,” said J.C. Seneca, the Seneca Nation president. “You know, we go away, they forget about us.

The meeting included representatives from the Seneca Nation, the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe, and the Shinnecock Nation.
