Steck introduces bill to make opioid treatments more accessible
More access to drugs to prevent opioid overdoses could be on the way in New York state.
Assemblymember Phil Steck has introduced the Mental Hygiene Law. It would require the Department of Health to provide any opioid reversers approved by the FDA.
Communities should have access to any treatments that could stop opioid deaths, said Steck.
“The people who actually provide the medical care and the emergency response are the people should be making the decisions on what type of substances they need to use as opioid antagonist,” said Steck. “The world changes all the time in this area. And of course, we have a tremendous proliferation of fentanyl and that is why we introduced this legislation.”
The bill is currently being reviewed by an Assembly committee.
