The city of Glens Falls was incorporated in 1839.

The story of how it got its name goes back to the 1700s.

A group of Quakers led by a man named Abraham Wing settled down here. They called the area Wing’s Falls.

According to the story, General Glen from Schenectady got a land grant and used to go to the tavern run by Wing.

One day, he proposed picking up the entire bar tab, if Wing would transfer over the name of the city.
