You may have been surprised to see high electric bills for your home this winter. You’re not alone. A viewer reached out to 13 Investigates to ask why.

She said her bill quadrupled, and while their use was up, she tells us it was only up slightly.

She says she knows others having similar experiences, so 13 Investigates reached out to National Grid. They tell us the bill is split into two parts, supply and delivery.

Supply cost is what National Grid pays for electricity and natural gas. Those costs are not controlled by National Grid, and they tell us those costs are up. National Grid says they do not mark up the increase. Customers pay what the company pays.

As for delivery, that charge covers the cost of maintaining the system that gets the electricity or gas to customers. That includes the cost of crews and equipment.

The Public Service Commission did approve a delivery rate increase a couple of weeks ago. It will start showing up in bills this month.

National Grid did send a link with more info on that, including the estimated increase customers will see on a typical bill.
