Registration oversight haunts car’s former owner

A man in Albany recently received two parking tickets for a car he no longer owned. The process started last summer. A man who NewsChannel 13 is calling "Tom" posted pictures of his 2004 Honda Civic to Facebook Marketplace.

A man in Albany recently received two parking tickets for a car he no longer owned.

The process started last summer. A man who NewsChannel 13 is calling “Tom” posted pictures of his 2004 Honda Civic to Facebook Marketplace.

Tom said someone reached out saying they’ll buy the car. It was sold for $2,000.

However, while Tom removed the plates, he did not remove the registration sticker.

Then in August 2024, he received two tickets from the city of Albany for expired registration, because the registration sticker in the car was tied to his name.

Albany dismissed the tickets once he explained the situation, Tom said.

However, Tom got more parking tickets, including $300 worth in the city of Troy.

The city of Troy reduced the $300 fee. Tom shared an invoice showing he ended up paying $100 for tickets on that car he no longer owns.

“As long as that registration sticker is on that vehicle, even if you’re not driving it, and if you’ve sold the vehicle to another person, the tickets will go to your name,” Tom said.
