AG warns of scams related to wildfires 

Attorney General Letitia James is warning New Yorkers to be vigilant for scammers looking to take advantage of their concern about recent wildfires.  

Scam charities may attempt to exploit the situation. People should check to make sure they are giving to legitimate organizations.  

Among the tips is to check the websites behind email solicitations. Also, do not give out their information or credit card number unless they have verified the charity.  

Conduct research when giving through social media or fundraising websites to identify the organizers, according to the Attorney General’s Office. Donors should look at the frequently asked questions section of the website to see what fees may be charged. Also, do not give out cash.

Anyone who believes an organization is misrepresenting its work or is running a scam is asked to file a complaint with the Charities Bureau or call 212-416-8401.
