Demolition crews were tearing down a building in the area of Madison Avenue and Ontario Street in Albany on Monday. The building caught fire on Sunday evening.
The fire destroyed the Mexican Taqueria restaurant, and at least three homes.
There’s also a lot of damage to the apartments next door – leaving a family to figure out what’s next.
Albany firefighters worked hard to put out the fire and keep it contained.
The damage was just too much, and the building had to be demolished. There is also a lot of damage to the building next door.
Three people lived upstairs. Downstairs, it was the family home for Angel Garcia, his wife and kids.
Garcia works a couple of jobs – including custodial work here at NewsChannel 13.
There is water all over the floor of his home and it’s dripping down from the ceiling. Everything stinks of smoke.
The landlord said he may have lost the building, but his concern is for Garcia, who lost his home.
Another man said he lived upstairs in the now-demolished building, and now has just a few bucks in his wallet.
