Albany man arrested twice in one day in assault, robbery

A 32-year-old Albany man was arrested twice in one day – including for an incident in which he allegedly assaulted two police officers.

Albany Police responded to the Townsend Park Apartments at 45 Central Ave. around 2:20 a.m. on Monday for a report of a person who was trespassing.

Police said the suspect, Brian Briggs, 32,  became combative with officers and refused to comply with their commands. Briggs allegedly began fighting with them, including placing his arm around the officer’s neck and punching another one in the face, injuring the officer’s nose.

Briggs was charged with second-degree assault, criminal obstruction of breathing, resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration and criminal trespass. He was arraigned Monday morning in Albany City Criminal Court and released under the supervision of probation.

Officers returned to that same address around 2:30 p.m. for reports of a person with a weapon. Briggs is accused of threatening a man with a gun and demanding property for running away. Police saw Briggs and arrested him after a brief chase. He allegedly had a loaded gun.

No one was hurt.

Briggs was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and robbery. He was arraigned and sent to Albany County Jail.
