Albany man gets 14 years in prison on gun charges as he awaits trial in murder case

Eric Chapman, a 19-year-old from Albany, has been sentenced to a minimum of 14 years in prison after being convicted on two separate gun-related charges.

An Albany man is heading to prison for 14 years for having illegal guns, and he could face more time if convicted in a murder case.

Eric Chapman, 19, was sentenced on Tuesday in Albany County Court on two separate weapons charges. The first one happened on Oct. 5, 2023, when Albany Police were trying to arrest Chapman on a warrant. He ran away in the area of Clinton Avenue and Judson Street and tossed the gun in the woods, according to the Albany County District Attorney’s Office. DNA testing linked Chapman to the gun, according to the Albany County District Attorney’s Office. He received 6 ½ years in prison for that incident.

Judge Andra Ackerman also sentenced Chapman to 7 ½ years in prison for incident in which he was caught on July 3, 2024 carrying a loaded Glock handgun and high-capacity magazine.

The two sentences will run consecutively for a total of 14 years.

Chapman is also a suspect in the murder of 18-year-old Javone Sims Jr. Sims was shot on June 22, 2023, in the backyard of a residence on Third Street. The trial is set to begin on June 27.
