A woman in Pittsfield, Massachusetts was told there’s a price to pay for missing jury duty. If not for an alert supermarket employee, the con may have worked.

The phone call came in on New Year’s Day. The Berkshire County woman was told she had to pay a $2,000 fine for missing federal jury duty, and she believed it.

The scammer argued with the woman on the phone for nearly two hours. She eventually relented and ran to her local Stop-N-Shop Supermarket to pick out a gift card.

The people at the store warned her to be very careful, because there’s usually a scam behind it.

Wanting a second option, the woman headed to the Berkshire County Sheriff’s Office, where she received confirmation she was being conned.
