Cambridge schools ban phone use this fall
Cambridge Central Schools are banning students from using phones during the school day starting this fall.
Cambridge Elementary School students will not be able to use personal electronic devices until the end of the school day. The device must be turned off and out of sight until the end of the day, according to a statement from the district.
Cambridge Junior-Senior High School is using Yondr pouches, which is a lockable pouch in which the devices will be stored. Students will still be able to carry the phones, but they’ll be in the pouches that can only be locked or unlocked from a certain location.
Yondr has been implemented in more than 2,000 schools in 16 countries.
“We believe that phones have great utility. We have also found that learning and social behavior improve drastically when students are fully engaged with their teachers and classmates,” the district said in a statement.
If students use the device, they will be confiscated until the end of the school day. After the first offense, the parents or guardian will be contacted.
A forum on the pouches will be held on Thursday July 25 at 6 p.m. in the high school auditorium.
