Albany Police said a 12-year-old boy is dead, and an 11-year-old girl is in critical condition after falling through the ice at the lake in Washington Park.

Officials said they received a call on Saturday around 4:35 p.m. for two juveniles who had fallen through the ice.

When police and firefighters arrived on the scene, they said they located and rescued the young girl, who was treated on scene and taken to Albany Medical Center Hospital for further treatment.

Police said a secondary search was done by the New York State Police underwater recovery team, and around 7:25 p.m., they recovered the body of a 12-year-old boy from the lake who was deceased.

Albany Police worked with firefighters and New York State Police on a rescue boat on the lake, as crews searched for hours for the young boy.

Through investigation, police said they believe the boy had tried to walk across the lake towards the lake house and fell through the ice.

The young girl saw the boy fall through the ice, and while she was attempting to help the boy, she also fell through the ice, said officials.

The names of the victims will not be released due to their ages.

Both of the kids are students at North Albany Middle School apart of the Albany City School District.

The district’s superintendent Joseph Hochreiter said “our hearts go out to the families of these students at this incredibly difficult time. This is a terrible tragedy, and we are grieving as a school community.”

The district said it will have crisis service available for any student or school employee who needs support or would like to talk about the accident at North Albany Middle School on Monday.
