Working in the extreme cold
The cold temperatures pose challenges for first responders, and they can be dangerous for animals, as well as human beings.
The frigid temperatures can be dangerous.
Firefighters are getting a lot of slip-and-fall calls. The cold makes emergency response a lot more difficult.
When it’s this cold, you can quickly feel as if your fingers are numb and painful.
There are also cardiac issues outside with people shoveling, and hazards such as carbon monoxide inside. People want to make sure they clear out the outside vents, and that their detectors are working.
If you’re having problems with your heat, never switch to alternative ways like using an oven or bringing in kerosene heaters or propane heaters, according to firefighters. Dressing in layers is key, they said.
