Firefighters battle fire at old Adams factory

An abandoned factory in Adams, Mass. caught fire.

A big fire at an abandoned factory in Adams is mostly under control now, the fire chief said. However, there were still some hot spots as of late Wednesday afternoon.

Crews were called to the former MacDermid Graphic Arts factory off Commercial Street just before 8 a.m. Wednesday. The building has been vacant for years.

A hazmat team was on site for safety precautions, due to concerns about unknown materials burning inside the building.

Residents in the nearby area received emergency alerts advising those with respiratory issues to stay indoors, although officials have confirmed there is no current danger to the surrounding community.

The hazmat team was on scene and found that the air quality only had an issue while right next to the fire, according to the fire chief. There are no injuries, he said.

There have been no reported injuries, according to fire investigators.

Investigators will now start to look into how this fire started, as their investigation begins.
