The FDA plans to offer omicron targeted COVID-19 vaccine boosters around Labor Day.

The updated booster shots will be aimed at teens and adults as part of the agency’s fall booster campaign.

Both the Moderna and Pfizer boosters are designed to target the BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants of omicron.

The CDC says the BA.5 variant is responsible for about 9 in 10 new COVID cases in the United States.

By matching the current strains of COVID, the government hopes it will improve the effectiveness of shots and provide longer lasting immunity.
