Gin Blossoms to perform free concert in Saratoga Springs for Belmont

Gin Blossoms will be the headlining band at Belmont on Broadway this June. They were a constant presence on the charts in the 1990s.

Gin Blossoms will be the headlining band at Belmont on Broadway this June. They were a constant presence on the charts in the 1990s.

The band’s hits include “Hey Jealousy,” “Follow You Down,” “Found Out About You,” and others.

They’ll close down Broadway to cars and set up a stage in front of the City Center, just like they did last year when 25,000 people watched Blues Traveler kick off the Belmont Festival.

“I’ve never seen anything like that on Broadway. Far as the eye could see from that stage, there were people, and they were having a good time. It was safe. It was free,” said Todd Shimkus, president of the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce.

It will be free again this year, thanks to a partnership between the public and private sector. Saratoga County is chipping in some of its occupancy tax money, saying they saw a 10% increase last June.

“It just brings a lot of excitement to the county. It’s a wonderful showcase for Saratoga County. There’s a lot to see and do here. The Belmont is a huge event, and to have that right here in our backyard is very special,” said Phil Barrett, chairman of the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors.

The Belmont is being held here again as Belmont Park is undergoing a half-billion-dollar transformation. NYRA’s CEO said Thursday that construction there is on schedule, but says it’s too early to say if it will be ready to host the big race next year.
