Flooding cancels water-based events at Waterford Canal Fest

The flooding in Waterford from over the weekend is affecting this year's Waterford Canal Fest. Because of high water levels and debris in the canal, there will be no water-based activities.

The flooding in Waterford from over the weekend is affecting this year’s Waterford Canal Fest, but organizers are hoping will enjoy the many activities scheduled.

Because of high water levels and debris in the canal, there will be no water-based activities.

The boat and kayak tours, as well as the popular fishing clinic, will take place on another day, once the waterway settles down and the canal officially opens.

However, there will still be a 55 vendors along the canal, live music, activities for kids, food, and more.

This year was supposed to be extra special because it marks the 200th anniversary of the New York State Canal system.

The Waterford Canal Festival usually brings out thousands of people every single year.

One of the event coordinators says that’s just the downside of having outside festivals working around Mother Nature.

“It’s a lot to have to tell people they can’t have what they wanted, so we’re a little disappointed with not being able to be on the water this weekend, but we’ll get through it, and that’s okay,” said Julie Baker. “We’ve got all of our land events happening.”

The festival starts on Friday, but instead of starting at 10 a.m. like they usually do in years past, they’re starting at noon.

The event goes through Sunday.
