Gillibrand pushing bill to make internet more affordable
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is pushing to make sure all New Yorkers can get online.
Gillibrand (D β N.Y.) is sponsoring a bill to renew the Affordable Connectivity Program. Funding for the program, which helps low-income households afford high-speed internet, ran out last month.
More than 1.7 million homes in New York lost access to their federal benefits.
Having internet can create economic opportunity and have lifelong impacts, especially for kids, according to Gillibrand.
βIt can lead to new business creation, help lower unemployment rates, create jobs, raise property values and improve life and health outcomes,β she said.
The new legislation would give eligible households a monthly discount of up to $30 off the cost of their internet service.
