Glens Falls shows off downtown improvements

Glens Falls shows off downtown improvements to New York State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli including the new Market Center.

Glens Falls leaders got to show off what $10 million in state money has done for the city.

Mayor Bill Collins led state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli on a tour of downtown, including the renovations on State Street.

It has been nearly nine years since the city was awarded a Downtown Revitalization Initiative grant.

About $5 million of that funding went to the new Market Center, which the city is about to open on South Street and was once home to a rundown bar.

Construction is going on next door on a demonstration kitchen, restaurant, bars and roughly 100 apartments on the upper floors.

DiNapoli said it is a good use of state funding.

“It clearly is well spent. Government can’t do it all. Business can’t do it all. But government and business working together, that’s how you have a formula for success,” he said.

The state funding has spurred over $30 million in private investment, Collins said.

“Well, I think the future of Glens Falls is bright, and I want them to come and visit Glens Falls and experience it for the first time,” he said.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place on Friday, May 16 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. for the new Market Center. It will feature food and live music.

The Glens Falls Farmers Market will begin operating there on Saturday, June 7.
