Lawmakers with Capital Region ties sworn-in for newest terms

Several Capital Region representatives were sworn into Congress on Friday. That includes Josh Riley, representing the 19th Congressional District, Paul Tonko, representing the 20th Congressional District, and Elise Stefanik, who has represented New York's 21st Congressional District since 2014.

There was an historic first in the New York State Senate on Friday.

Former Assemblywoman Pat Fahy is now Senator Fahy.

The Democrat is the first woman to represent the 46th Senate District, which includes sections of Albany, Schenectady and Montgomery counties.

Meanwhile, several Capital Region representatives were sworn into Congress on Friday. That includes Josh Riley, representing the 19th Congressional District, Paul Tonko, representing the 20th Congressional District, and Elise Stefanik, who has represented New York’s 21st Congressional District since 2014.

However, she won’t for much longer as President-elect Trump has other plans for her.

Rep. Stefanik will serve as ambassador to the United Nations under the incoming Trump administration.
Stefanik must leave Congress to fill that role.

It’s unclear if she will do that before President-elect Trump’s inauguration, or will wait until Inauguration Day.

Once Stefanik vacates her seat, Gov. Kathy Hochul will have 10 days to call for a special election to fill it.

That election must be held within 90 days.
