Legislators ask state to reconsider closing Washington County prison
State legislators are asking New York to reconsider the plan to close Great Meadow Correctional Facility.
As you saw First on 13 last Thursday, the state said it will close the maximum-security prison in November.
The Department of Corrections told the prison’s approximately 650 employees last Thursday morning.
State Senators Dan Stec and Jake Ashby and Assemblyman Matt Simpson have sent a letter to Corrections asking they reconsider, saying the closing will “further damage an already economically fragile region to undermining the safety of officers, staff and inmates…”
Stec is also worried about what would happen to the massive facility, writing:
“The economic impact will be exacerbated by…Great Meadow likely being allowed to fall into disrepair and become blight on our region…”
The lawmakers asked for a meeting with the commissioner of corrections.
