Fundraiser for local nurse suffering from anemia

A nurse from Albany Medical Center needs a bone marrow transplant to survive.

Tia Szczepanski, 29, is a pediatric nurse in the ICU at Albany Medical Center and has not been able to go to work recently. That’s because she has been diagnosed with severe aplastic anemia and now needs an exact bone marrow match to survive.

“We’re still kind of going through the whole process,” said Tia.

Saturday a fundraiser was held for Tia at Patrick’s Pub in Watervliet. Hundreds came out as people wore Tia t-shirts, listened to live music, and donated to help Tia.

Patrick’s Pub owner Kristin Donlon said by the end of the fundraiser over $65,000 were raised for Tia.

“So it’s just been a wonderful show of individuals going into this,” said Donlon.

Tia was taken back by all the support.

“It’s overwhelming, it’s emotional. I’m really grateful for all the support. We have a really big army and I feel like we’ve already gone through a lot. And having everyone behind us is really, really, amazing,” said Tia.
