Loophole closed on background checks at gun shows
DOJ requiring anyone who sells guns to perform background checks, whether at a brick-and-mortar store, gun show or online.
The Department of Justice is closing the gun show loophole for background checks on firearms.
The new rule, announced Thursday, makes clear that anyone engaged in the business of selling firearms must be federally licensed and conduct background checks – regardless of whether they are selling on the internet, at a gun show or at a brick-and-mortar store.
The new rule will save lives, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand said.
“This bold action will close the ‘gun-show loophole’ that allows gun dealers to sell firearms without performing background checks, which allows dangerous individuals like domestic abusers and felons to obtain guns,” she said in a statement.
