Man accused of hitting UAlbany student with dirt bike released on bail

The Watervliet man accused of hitting and severely injuring a UAlbany student with a dirt bike and leaving the scene has posted bail.

Austin Breyette, 25, was released on Tuesday to the supervision of probation with electronic monitoring, according to the Albany County Court clerk’s office.

Breyette allegedly hit and severely injured Alexa Kropf just before midnight on April 26. Kropf had serious injuries, including a fractured pelvis and required several brain surgeries.

She was planning to continue her studies at UAlbany online as she recovered at her Long Island home. She is in her second year.

Breyette is facing charges of second-degree assault, leaving the scene of an incident without reporting and two counts of tampering with physical evidence. He allegedly hid the dirt bike to conceal the crime.

Bail had been set at $100,000 cash, $100,000 bond or $200,000 partially secured bond. How Breyette posted bail was not available from the clerk’s office.

Breyette is due back in court on Oct. 17 for a hearing on motions filed by his attorney to suppress evidence.
