Akili-Abdul Duncan, 53, is charged with criminal possession of a weapon.
Duncan does not have a New York state pistol permit, investigators said.
Duncan was hired in August 2022, Guilderland School Superintendent Dr. Marie Wiles said. He underwent a rigorous review process, she said, which included a fingerprinting and background check.
Duncan was also arrested by Rensselaer Police on Friday for possessing a .380 caliber pistol during a domestic-related incident, police said. These charges are separate to the ones in Guilderland, according to Rensselaer Police.
He is currently being held at the Rensselaer County Jail.
