Family and friends are identifying the man who died in Troy police custody.
They tell NewsChannel 13 that his name is Woody Smith. Smith, who friends call Shabba, was 48 years old.
He died Friday after Troy Police say they got a call for someone trespassing in Lansingburgh. When officers arrived, they say they found a man leaving through a first-floor window.
Police say they handcuffed him and put him on the ground on his side. That’s when they say he began to show signs of medical distress. He later died at a hospital.
Authorities have not identified Smith or provided more information.
The Attorney General’s Office is investigating the death.
