Many drivers ignoring Albany’s new 25 mph speed limit
The speed limit in the city of Albany was officially reduced from 30 miles per hour to 25 miles per hour on Jan. 1.
However, when NewsChannel 13 checked to see if cars were actually slowing down, it seemed either people weren’t aware of the lowered speed limit, or else they don’t care.
With our handheld radar gun, we clocked some vehicles traveling in excess of 40 miles an hour after they entered the city.
Interim Albany Police Chief Brendan Cox reiterated that the city isn’t doing this to make money. They’re doing it because data indicates other municipalities that have lowered their speed limit have seen accidents, injuries and fatality rates lowered significantly as well.
However, he is giving his officers some discretion.
